Helping the right thing to happen

The financial data environment

Managing the numbers is difficult enough.  What about managing all the data about the numbers?  If numbers are your data then the information about the numbers is your meta data.  The big problem is keeping the data and its meta data together.  How many times a day do you have to stop and trace back some number to its origin so that you can make sure it's the right number for the story you are trying to tell?

The financial functions are data rich and often information poor.  Whether your responsibility is costs, revenues, taxes, payroll, asset management, investments or running the Super Bowl pool, you must be able to attach information to numbers and manage the attachments.

Chances are that you have people in your company who could help you set this up but they are probably allocated to some more visible project.  What do you do?  Take a look around the Org Chart.  You'll note that many others have the same problem you do.  Reach out to them.  Show them this web site.

Begin to build a community for data management.  No matter what else happens, you'll find this effort worthwhile.  You may form a brown bag group, you may find that others have solved some of your problems already or that you have an answer for one of theirs.

Community is a fundamental building block for all data management efforts so whatever step you take, it will be one step closer to where you need to be.

The best information for the best decision.

Leadership for change, management for effectiveness, governance for stability.
